Separate an image-only PDF from a text PDF

Open the exact file you intend to upload, not the Word source or a screenshot in your gallery. Drag across one sentence in the project section. Copy it into a plain-text editor and compare the words. A selection that covers a rectangular image rather than individual words is a warning sign, although viewers behave differently.

Next, search inside the PDF for a distinctive term you can see, such as PostgreSQL. A failed search alone is not a complete diagnosis: text encoding or viewer settings can also interfere. Use the selection, copy, and search checks together. A filename ending in .pdf tells you the container type, not whether it holds readable text.

Choose the least destructive repair

If the resume was written in Word or another editor, reopen that source and export a fresh PDF. Do not photograph the page, take a screenshot, or convert each page into an image to preserve the design. Those routes discard the document text you are trying to keep.

If the source is genuinely unavailable, OCR can add a text layer to a scan. Adobe documents this capability in Acrobat. Work on a copy, choose the language used in the resume, and review the result. Do not assume that running OCR makes a blurry scan accurate, or that a paid product is the only available OCR option.

Inspect the characters that can change an application

Read the contact line character by character. A zero can become the letter O; the digit one can become a lowercase l. That matters more in an email address than in a decorative heading. Check plus signs in C++, the period in Node.js, institution names, graduation dates, and links.

In this fictional example, the page looks almost unchanged after recognition, but the underlying text now carries the project and contact information. The repaired text still needs to be compared against the original. Do not quietly correct an OCR mistake by adding a skill or result the applicant never had.

Verify the uploaded version, not only the local repair

Save the repaired file with a distinct name and reopen it from its saved location. Repeat the copy test on the first and last sections. If an application portal shows a preview or prefills fields, inspect those fields before submission. A successful attachment does not establish that the contents were parsed correctly.

If the portal still loses information, try the supported editable format when the employer permits it, or enter the affected fields manually. Keep the submitted copy and the job description together so you can reproduce the issue. A file repair restores access to your evidence; it does not make a weak project relevant to a different job.
